Sustainable Mooring<\/h6>\n

Who loves the sea<\/strong> more than boaters? Sailing is not just any hobby. Purchasing, managing and<\/x>maintaining a boat is a considerable commitment, which only those who have a great passion for the sea can<\/x>face year after year with a smile. And for this reason, boaters should care
\nmore than anyone else about the protection of the marine ecosystem,<\/strong> minimizing their own
\nimpact. Certainly there are many ways to navigate in a manner respectful of the environment<\/strong>: we speak
\nof precautions when refueling<\/strong>, using eco-sustainable products for
\ncleaning<\/strong> the boat, preferring sailing or setting a moderate
\ncruising speed, fully respecting marine protected areas, and so on. Certainly
\nsome actions are easier than others: it doesn’t take much effort to avoid throwing
\ncigarette butts or empty bottles into the water, whereas careful attention is needed
\nwhen performing a sustainable mooring at anchorage<\/strong>, avoiding destroying the seabed. And indeed there are<\/x>many boaters who, when leaving the spot chosen for a break along the coast, find themselves<\/x>with their anchor adorned with tufts of posidonia<\/g>. In this case the message couldn’t be clearer:<\/x>the mooring has caused obvious damage to the seabed. Today we will therefore see why
\nprotecting the marine seabed is so important, and how to perform moorings sustainably
\neven when far from your berth<\/strong> in port. <\/p>\n

Why Posidonia is so Important<\/h3>\n

Performing a sustainable mooring in a marina<\/strong> like ours presents no
\ndifficulty: the structure is specifically designed to guarantee simple mooring<\/a>, safe and
\nperfectly respectful of the environment. This is not the case when mooring at anchorage. There we are in the<\/strong>
\nmiddle of nature<\/strong>, without devices or elements made available to us to
\nsecure the boat. Anchoring carelessly at anchorage can therefore have disastrous effects<\/x>on the marine ecosystem: down there, where we will drop the anchor, there may be a habitat that<\/x>certainly doesn’t appreciate being hit and scraped by an anchor weighing several dozen kilograms. What<\/x>fears anchoring most is especially posidonia<\/g>, whose meadows cover large areas of<\/x>our Mediterranean<\/g>. But why is protecting this marine plant so important?
\nWe’re talking about a plant that produces leaves, fruits and flowers up to 40 meters deep<\/strong>, and which has a
\nfundamental role for the health of the seas and the planet: posidonia absorbs large quantities
\nof carbon dioxide<\/strong>, releasing significant amounts of oxygen. It is estimated that one square meter of
\nthis vegetation can produce about 15 liters of oxygen per day<\/strong>, much more for
\nexample than what is produced by tropical forests, considered the lungs of the planet.
\nAnd that’s not all, as posidonia, with its long leaves and roots, prevents erosion
\nof the seabed and coasts, and reduces wave action: in other words, it is our ally<\/strong>
\nagainst storms.<\/strong>
\nIt should also be emphasized that posidonia is not the only plant we should avoid touching with our
\nanchors. It is good to also respect mangrove<\/strong> forests, important growth areas for fish species. And it would be good to avoid touching algae from the Caulerpa family as well,<\/x>albeit for the opposite reason: these are tropical algae that are invasive. Every time we<\/x>anchor there we end up spreading their seeds everywhere, encouraging their propagation. Good boaters should therefore avoid disturbing these algae and, when
\naccidentally pulling some tufts out of the water with the anchor, should
\nremember to bring them ashore and dispose of them in a bin, without throwing them back into the waves.
\nBut how then to moor sustainably at anchorage? <\/p>\n

How to Anchor at Anchorage without Causing Damage<\/h3>\n

The first commandment for mooring sustainably is therefore to avoid<\/strong> dropping
\nthe anchor over posidonia meadows. Also because it has been estimated that for each mooring you end up<\/x>damaging about 1 square meter of meadow<\/g>. And its regrowth will be slow, very slow, as<\/x>this plant develops at a rate of about 1 centimeter per year.<\/g> It should not be overlooked that<\/x>dropping the anchor over posidonia for a sustainable mooring means having decidedly poor holding: so<\/x>you will plow the seabed<\/g>, move, and cause further damage. So, where to drop the anchor?
\nRocky seabeds<\/strong> should also be avoided when possible. For several reasons. First of all,<\/x>from a pragmatic point of view, because on these seabeds the probability of finding yourself with a stuck<\/x>anchor is always very high. And unfortunately this happens very often: in these cases, those who cannot boast
\ngood diving skills can have serious problems freeing the anchor. Secondly, it must be said that
\nrocky seabeds very often host great biodiversity, made up of different species of flora and
\nfauna: placing the anchor in these habitats essentially means destroying their home.
\nIt is therefore understood that the best seabed on which to drop the anchor while respecting the environment \u2013 and to
\nhave secure anchoring \u2013 is that consisting of sand<\/strong>, preferring good plow anchors,
\ncapable of offering stable holding. To find the right spot, sandy and
\nlarge enough to accommodate both the anchor and the chain, it is good to rely on direct
\nobservation, possibly using a depth sounder in case the water is not particularly
\nclear. <\/p>\n

There is no doubt: mooring at anchorage is always beautiful, but it is necessary to do it the right way, with
\nall due care. And obviously our marina in Genoa<\/a> is always available
