June has finally arrived: now practically all boaters have put their
\nboats back in the water, completing post-winter storage maintenance, in preparation for excursions
\nand summer cruises. Our tourist port of Genoa<\/g> is already quite lively, and in our<\/x>berths, vessels of all types are moving, from the typical Ligurian gozzo to the most prestigious yachts.<\/x>Whether large or small, ultra-modern or traditional, all pleasure craft must comply with safety<\/x>equipment requirements, both by law and common sense. Therefore, before leaving
\nyour berth and heading out to sea, it’s always wise to check at the beginning of summer if all the
\nnecessary safety equipment is present, in good condition, and easily accessible.
\nHere are the checks to make! <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

What are the legal requirements<\/strong>
\nAs is known, mandatory safety equipment is defined by law based on the distance
\nfrom the coast that you intend to reach with your boat. These lists \u2013 which for boats<\/x>navigating far from the shore are indeed very long \u2013 never fail to provoke<\/x>complaints among boaters, who would often prefer to spend their boat budget differently<\/x>and keep their lockers free for other accessories. But it’s
\nalso true that in some cases, the detailed rules of the Nautical Code leave gaps
\nthat should be filled with common sense, thus doing more than strictly necessary at
\nthe legal level: for example, why is a coastal life raft mandatory beyond 6 miles,
\nwhile not even a life ring is required beyond 3 miles? <\/p>\n

\"safety<\/figure>\n

In any case, the basics of the regulations are known: those navigating within one mile from the coast must
\nhave on board simply a life jacket, a life ring with rope, a
\npump, and a fire extinguisher. Those who want to navigate within 3 miles must<\/x>also add a smoke float, 2 hand flares, and a sound signal, along with<\/x>mandatory navigation lights. Beyond 3 miles but within 6 miles, the
\nsafety equipment must also include 2 parachute flares. <\/p>\n

It’s from navigation within 12 miles that the safety equipment list becomes substantial,
\nwith the addition of a coastal life raft, nautical compass, and marine VHF.
\nThose going beyond 12 miles must have a proper life raft, as well as other
\nmandatory accessories such as a clock, binoculars, barometer, regulation first aid kit,
\nnautical charts, radar reflector, and conical signal.<\/p>\n

The number of people on board<\/strong>
\nAmong our berths in Genoa, we often hear unusual interpretations of laws
\nrelated to safety during navigation, starting with the management of safety equipment.
\nIt’s worth emphasizing that mere possession is not enough: items on board
\nmust first be consistent with the number of passengers embarked. Therefore, those who
\nhave a crew of 8 people on board must have at least 8 life jackets
\n(it would be better to have one spare) and, for navigation beyond 6 miles,
\na regulation life raft<\/a> capable of accommodating at least 8 people. <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

Safety equipment expiration dates<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another detail that’s always worth highlighting is that safety equipment is not
\neternal, quite the contrary. The life raft, for example, must undergo regular inspection over<\/x>time, and this requirement applies to both coastal and beyond-12-mile models;<\/x>the first inspection must be done 3 years after purchase, while subsequent ones must be done<\/x>every 2 years. Other expiration dates and checks to keep in mind are those for fire extinguishers, flares,<\/x>medical devices in the first aid kit, and so on. Life jackets should
\nalso be checked, particularly the self-inflating ones: special attention
\nshould be paid to checking the triggers, which typically expire after 4 or 5 years. <\/p>\n

Fines for non-compliance<\/strong>
\nHaving safety equipment on board is first and foremost a matter of common sense. Certainly, however,<\/x>the presence of sanctions for those who don’t follow the rules is also a strong motivator! It’s important
\nto know that boaters caught by authorities not fully complying with the list of
\nminimum safety equipment and life-saving devices face a fine ranging between
\n207 euros and 1,033 euros; for small boats, the fines are automatically halved. <\/p>\n

The accessibility of safety equipment<\/strong>
\nTo summarize: safety equipment to be carried on board must be regulated according to the
\ndistance from the coast you intend to reach. But it must also be managed based on the number of<\/x>passengers on board, and checked over time to ensure you’re not relying on<\/x>devices that, in an emergency, will prove to be old or unusable. Consider the
\ndramatic consequences of deploying a life raft during an emergency only
\nto find it deflated and unusable! But that’s not all: all safety equipment must be<\/x>easily accessible, not scattered in overcrowded lockers. The risk is not<\/x>finding what’s needed when needed, or wasting precious minutes at a time when you shouldn’t<\/x>waste even a second. Following this reasoning, everyone
\non board should know where to find the life jackets, and more than one
\nperson should be trained to understand how to deploy the life raft in
