Certainly <strong>safety<\/strong>, and therefore shelter from sea storms. But also <strong>services<\/strong>, because a marina is not just any landing place. Furthermore, the <strong>location<\/strong> makes a difference, both in relation to boating destinations and the mainland, considering ease of arrival, distance from home, and so on. What else? Naturally, one also seeks <strong>comfort<\/strong>. However, it is not only the characteristics of the marina that make mooring comfortable: certain decisions made by the boater themselves can also make a difference, starting, for example, with the choice to facilitate boarding and disembarking from the vessel. But <strong>how do you choose the ideal gangway for your boat?<\/strong> Here are some targeted suggestions from those who see the most diverse gangways every day along the quays of the <a href=\"https:\/\/marinaportoantico.it\/en\/\" type=\"page\" id=\"6\">port of Genoa<\/a>!       <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The advantages of having a gangway for mooring in port<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Large vessels, yachts, and superyachts can typically boast a standard gangway, often telescopic and sometimes even retractable. For smaller boats, this accessory represents an <strong>optional <\/strong>extra at the owner&#8217;s discretion, or a purchase to be made at a later time. <\/p>\n\n<p>There is certainly no shortage of good reasons to make this &#8220;leap&#8221; and purchase a gangway:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Boarding and disembarking become more <strong>comfortable<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It increases <strong>safety<\/strong>, especially for children and the elderly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is <strong>easier<\/strong> to bring provisions, spare parts, and heavy accessories on board<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>In view of these benefits, most people are willing to overlook the disadvantages of boat gangways, namely <strong>bulk <\/strong>and<strong> weight on board<\/strong>. All this while knowing, however, that there are gangways that reduce these issues to a minimum. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to choose a gangway for your boat<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>To choose the ideal type of gangway to make mooring more comfortable, it is advisable to think about your needs, practical uses, and the<strong> space available on board <\/strong>to stow the gangway while sailing.<\/p>\n\n<p>Classic models are <strong>fixed<\/strong> ones, made of wood, metal, or plastic: the advantages here are precisely <strong>extreme simplicity and stability,<\/strong> as opposed to the actual bulk of this &#8220;little bridge,&#8221; which is quite significant for smaller vessels; it must be said, however, that in the case of a sailing boat, a fixed gangway can be secured out of the way <strong>along the lifelines.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Then there are <strong>folding<\/strong> models, which allow the bulk to be halved while sailing, ideally to be tucked into a locker. But beware: a 220-centimeter gangway, even when folded in half, will still occupy more than a meter, and it is not always easy to find <strong>that much space available in the lockers.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<p>Finally, there are <strong>inflatable<\/strong> gangways, which further reduce bulk, being more compact than folding models. On the other hand, however, their use is not immediate, as they require a pump to be inflated. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The cleverest gangways for boats: reduced bulk and versatility<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Inflatable gangways have been mentioned\u2014gangways that, when not in use, take up as much space as a travel bag, and when needed, can be inflated with a special pump to have more than enough capacity to ensure <strong>safe boarding and disembarking to and from the boat.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>While decidedly compact when stored, they have the aforementioned disadvantage of not being immediately ready for use. This issue can, however, be overshadowed in certain cases by another advantage of the &#8220;cleverer&#8221; inflatable gangway models: some models are designed to be<strong> used also as a SUP,<\/strong> and thus as a board for moving on the water with a paddle, or as a water platform alongside the boat. <\/p>\n\n<p>There are now several gangways of this type on the market, some of which, when used in SUP mode, can even be equipped with small <strong>fins<\/strong> to ensure greater stability and directionality in the water.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to choose a boat gangway: the right length<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>It is not just a matter of type and materials: when choosing a gangway for your boat, it is also necessary to calculate what the minimum length should be to ensure a comfortable and safe connection between the boat and the quay. There are gangways of every length on the market, typically between 180 and 300 centimeters. How to choose, and based on what factors?  <\/p>\n\n<p>First of all, it is important to know that to ensure good safety, the gangway must be <strong>significantly longer than the gap between the stern and the quay, <\/strong>resting by more than just a few centimeters. That said, the length of the gangway must be chosen based on the height of the stern relative to the quay (considering your own boat as well as the ports where you will stay) and the space available on board. That&#8217;s not all: boaters who are in the habit of <strong>leaving the <a href=\"https:\/\/marinaportoantico.it\/en\/boarding-from-the-tender-to-the-boat-safe-transfer\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"19286\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tender<\/a> at the stern<\/strong>, and therefore between the boat and the quay, will necessarily have to choose a gangway long enough to clear the service boat and reach the mainland comfortably!  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Beyond the gangway: comfort in the berth<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>As mentioned, the presence of a gangway between the boat and the quay is only one of the important elements for increasing comfort in port. Staying on this topic, elements such as <strong>removable handrails<\/strong>, fastening systems, and support wheels can make a difference by ensuring greater stability. <\/p>\n\n<p>And looking beyond the gangway? Mooring should be secure but soft, to dampen jerks and subsequent jolts: it therefore becomes important to use<strong> high-quality elastic mooring lines, <\/strong>optimized with <strong>shock absorbers<\/strong>, preferably rubber ones, to eliminate the annoying metallic noise of classic springs at the source. <\/p>\n\n<p>From here on, <strong>the services offered by the marina<\/strong> come into play, from the indispensable pedestals for electricity and fresh water on the quay to lighting, showers, toilets, and the presence of a Wi-Fi network, for a truly comfortable and limitless mooring experience.
