Looking at sustainable innovations in the superyacht and megayacht sectors, it might seem that clean propulsion for recreational boating is well within reach. Then, however, we are reminded of the resounding failure of the long-awaited—and repeatedly postponed— incentives for electric outboard marine engines , demonstrating that, in reality, much of the boating industry is not yet ready to tackle this phase of the ecological transition.

Let’s take a look, then, at the current state of clean propulsion for recreational boating—including concrete solutions and obstacles that still need to be overcome—with an eye toward both boat management and port management .

Clean Propulsion for Recreational Boating: Necessary but Not Sufficient

Whether we’re talking about purely electric motors or boats powered by sustainable fuels, one thing must be made clear: clean propulsion for recreational boating is not the industry’s only environmental challenge. To reduce the environmental impact of boating, it is in fact necessary to address numerous other aspects as well: it is no coincidence that in recent years, several shipyards have committed to using more sustainable or even recycled materials . But we must also consider the end-of-life management of boats, the protection of the marine environment, battery management, water treatment, and so on, all the way to the sustainable management of ports. It is It is therefore essential to focus on clean propulsion for recreational boating, without forgetting, however, that the boat of the future—in addition to being zero-emission—must be truly sustainable throughout its entire life cycle, from production to disposal.

Electric motors—but that’s not all

It is important to note that clean propulsion for recreational boating is not limited to electric motors: in this regard, the boating industry differs from the automotive industry, where virtually all other options have been set aside. In the marine sector, in fact, investment continues in research and development of additional types of sustainable engines, starting with those powered by clean fuels. The path toward decarbonization In fact, the recreational boating sector also relies on the use of biofuels, a solution that would, among other things, ensure high levels of range and allow for the continued use of both the same engines and the same distribution networks. The production of these biofuel “Drop-in” is already well established in the Nordic countries; at our latitudes, however, among Mediterranean marinas, it remains a rarity.

We also cannot overlook hydrogen, a technology that, on paper, is perfect for safely and efficiently minimizing carbon emissions; the real obstacle here is the industrial production of hydrogen, which is still far from sufficient to support the recreational boating sector’s transition.

Various solutions for different types of boats and uses

One thing is now clear: purely electric engines cannot be the sole solution for clean propulsion in recreational boating. In fact, there are several critical issues to consider, ranging from limitations on range to battery weight, from battery disposal to purchase costs. It is therefore clear that the sustainable future of marine propulsion will also have to explore different avenues, opting for different technologies based on their actual needs. In some areas, the “classic” electric motor can certainly be the best solution: consider the electric outboard motors mounted at the stern of tender, Rubber Boats, and small cabin cruisers that travel short distances, with the option to recharge their electric systems at their own dock, and with an interest in quiet operation and reduced maintenance. In other cases, however, biofuel proves to be the better option, such as in scenarios involving long journeys where there is a desire to preserve the internal combustion engine. Nor should we overlook the fact that in many cases the solutions adopted are actually “hybrid.” Consider the success of the hybrid marine engines, or even the fact that many of the sustainable yachts and superyachts built in recent years actually incorporate a variety of technologies. A good example is the previously mentioned Sanlorenzo 50Steel, with its Reformer Fuel Cell System which uses green methanol to produce hydrogen, which is then used to generate the electricity needed to power the vehicle’s onboard systems while the engine is off and with zero emissions.

We’re not that far from clean propulsion for recreational boating

There are many challenges, but between prototypes and boats that are already sailing in Mediterranean ports, it’s clear that the technologies needed for clean propulsion in recreational boating are ready. We’ve all seen (and not heard) boats powered by electric outboard motors, and it’s absolutely common among the marina berths see dozens of solar panels. And there are also concrete examples of the most innovative technologies being applied at sea: the TYKUN H1, designed by the MED Group, is a hydrogen-powered day tender (and, incidentally, made in Italy); in England, they have launched a nearly 50-foot catamaran, the Arcipelago 47, equipped with a parallel hybrid system running on methanol and hydrogen.

Electric Charging and Green Fuels at the Marina

As one might guess, it is not the shipyards that are slowing down the transition in the recreational boating sector: between electric motors, solar panels, hydrogen, and bi-fuel systems, there is no shortage of proposed solutions. What is often lacking, however, are the energy supply chains. Suffice it to say that currently less than 1% of global methanol production comes from renewable sources, and that the logistics networks for biofuels have yet to be developed. In this situation, the marinas A new challenge arises: How can we equip ourselves to provide boat owners with the necessary refueling services? Which technologies should we focus on? While the electrification of docks is a natural evolution for marinas, the development of bunkering facilities for green methanol requires a new way of thinking about recreational ports, as well as substantial investments.

Consider the superyachts launched in recent years which, thanks to a combination of large solar panels, substantial battery banks, and efficient electric motors, enable emission-free cruising even over long distances—such as the catamarans from Sunreef Yachts or those from Greenline Yachts.
