{"id":27678,"date":"2026-10-06T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-06T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marinaportoantico.it\/illegal-mooring-damage-risks-fines-and-solutions\/"},"modified":"2026-10-06T09:01:24","modified_gmt":"2026-10-06T08:01:24","slug":"illegal-mooring-damage-risks-fines-and-solutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marinaportoantico.it\/en\/illegal-mooring-damage-risks-fines-and-solutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Illegal Mooring: Damage, Risks, Fines (and Solutions)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>A recent Rai report described the summer of 2026 as a \u201ctacky\u201d one, singling out in particular the rude behavior of tourists that has reportedly plagued the Sardinian coast in recent months, with the most serious incidents occurring in the Maddalena National Park. The report points the finger at illegal parties in protected areas, sand theft, trash left on the beach, but also\u2014and above all <strong>\u2014<\/strong> at <strong>unauthorized mooring,<\/strong> with all the <strong>damage<\/strong> it causes  that this can have on the environment, the island\u2019s image, and its livability. It\u2019s not that unauthorized mooring is a phenomenon unique to Sardinia\u2014far from it: all the most famous destinations along our coasts face this threat. In recent years, significant problems of this kind have been reported in Capri, Ischia, and in the areas of  <a href=\"https:\/\/marinaportoantico.it\/en\/a-classic-for-every-season-a-boat-trip-from-genoa-to-portofino\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"27423\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Portofino<\/strong> <\/a>and the Tigullio region, in various Sicilian bays, and in the Tuscan Archipelago\u2014to name just a few of the main examples. On the one hand, the problem certainly lies at the administrative level, with individual municipal governments and the various destinations called upon to  <strong>to establish specific rules<\/strong>  and then to  <strong>ensure compliance with them,<\/strong>  by offering viable alternative solutions; on the other hand, the boaters themselves are called upon\u2014from those who take small pleasure boats out on the weekend all the way to the  <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/marinaportoantico.it\/en\/superyacht-berths-in-genoa\/\" type=\"page\" id=\"26051\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">superyacht<\/a> owners<\/strong>. In this article, we will therefore explain  <strong>What Is Illegal Mooring?<\/strong>, what kind of damage it can cause, what the risks are for boats and boaters, and what the solutions are.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Illegal Mooring?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Let\u2019s start by explaining what is meant by the term \u201cwild mooring.\u201d There may, in fact, be some confusion: sometimes the terms \u201cwild mooring\u201d or \u201cwild anchoring\u201d are used to refer to stops at sea along coastlines that are, in fact, \u201cwild\u201d\u2014and therefore in the complete absence of facilities  <strong>as  <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/marinaportoantico.it\/en\/\" type=\"page\" id=\"6\"><strong>marinas<\/strong>,<\/a>  piers or buoys. So the term is used to refer to anchorages with a line tied to shore, anchorages in particularly narrow bays, and so on. What is increasingly making headlines in newspapers, however, is a decidedly different type of illegal mooring: in fact, we\u2019re talking about vessels anchoring at sea in areas where anchoring is\u2014or should be\u2014  <strong>prohibited<\/strong>, thus failing to comply with the rules, permits, or mooring procedures established for that specific area. This ranges from the use of a  <strong>mooring spot<\/strong>  ranging from areas reserved for others until the boat stops in places where access by boats is prohibited, all the way to anchorages in areas subject to strict environmental protection. At the heart of this phenomenon, therefore, is always a boater who is unaware of or  <strong>does not follow the rules<\/strong>  that govern navigation, safety, and environmental protection in a given area. As we\u2019ll see below, the damage caused by unauthorized mooring can be extensive and varied.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Damage Caused by Illegal Mooring<\/h2>\n\n<p>When boats gather in an uncontrolled manner in bays, coves, and sensitive coastal areas, they can cause  <strong>serious consequences for the marine environment<\/strong>. As is well known, one of the main victims of this behavior is the  <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/marinaportoantico.it\/en\/sustainable-mooring-how-to-protect-posidonia\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"19734\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Posidonia<\/a><\/strong>, which is a marine plant commonly found along our coasts, to create  <strong>grasslands<\/strong>  which cover large portions of the Mediterranean seabed. These habitats provide shelter and food for numerous species and contribute to the natural protection of the coastline; careless anchoring in these areas, due to the action of the anchor and chain, can cause significant damage to the seagrass beds. To make matters worse, Posidonia can take a very long time to recover: a  <strong>damaged prairie<\/strong>  In fact, it can take a long time for it to return to its original shape, and sometimes this \u201crecovery\u201d simply does not occur.<\/p>\n\n<p>Other damages caused by illegal mooring include <strong>disturbances to marine wildlife,<\/strong> which can become severe along the most sensitive or crowded coastal areas. Furthermore, we cannot overlook <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/marinaportoantico.it\/en\/sustainable-boating-what-solutions\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"24386\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pollution<\/a><\/strong>caused by engine exhaust as well as by trash discarded\u2014intentionally or unintentionally\u2014into the water.<br\/><br\/>It is not just a matter of environmental damage. Illegal mooring can also spoil the scenic beauty of bays and coves, discouraging tourists and thereby harming the tourist destination itself.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Risks for Boaters<\/h2>\n\n<p>When you think about the risks that unauthorized mooring can pose to boaters, your mind immediately turns to  <strong>fines<\/strong>. But there&#8217;s more to it than just penalties. Let&#8217;s consider the  <strong>stops in the busiest anchorages,<\/strong>  where inexperienced or inattentive recreational boaters are also often found: in the absence of regulated waterways, the number of  <strong>risk of collisions,<\/strong>  difficulties in maneuvering and the discomfort caused by the  <strong>proximity of the various anchorages,<\/strong>  and things can become even riskier in the event of uncertain weather conditions. In many cases, you may also have to deal with  <strong>treacherous waters<\/strong>, due to its proximity to shipping lanes or areas frequented by swimmers.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fines for anchorages in violation of the rules<\/h3>\n\n<p>As reported by *La Nuova Sardegna*, a few weeks ago a captain decided to anchor a 37-meter superyacht in a Posidonia oceanica seagrass bed along the northern coast of Corsica. The authorities issued a  <strong>a fine of 90,000 euros,<\/strong>  accompanied by a three-year ban on sailing in French waters. French regulations provide for fines of up to 150,000 euros, seizure of the boat, and even one year in prison for certain forms of unauthorized anchorages. In Italy, on the other hand, the penalty for mooring in violation of the rules  <strong>It can range from 200 to 1,500 euros<\/strong>  (It should be noted that fines can exceed 1,000 euros simply for mooring within Marine Protected Areas, and can reach up to 1,500 euros only in the case of a repeat offense.)<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br\/>The Solutions<\/h2>\n\n<p>The first solution to illegal mooring, of course, is  <strong>find out about local rules and  <\/strong>respect them, anchoring only where it is permitted to do so, and carefully choosing where to drop anchor to protect the marine habitat below: Those traveling on large yachts and superyachts can also help preserve coves and inlets by using distance-based anchorages in specific locations, and then using more agile and environmentally friendly vessels  <a href=\"https:\/\/marinaportoantico.it\/en\/boarding-from-the-tender-to-the-boat-safe-transfer\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"19286\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>tender<\/strong> <\/a>\u2013 even better if it has an electric outboard motor \u2013 to explore the area.
