Deredia in Genoa – The sphere between two worlds: just a few meters from the Marina Porto Antico docks, we find the itinerant route that allows you to appreciate some of our town’s symbolic places

deredia parejaSince September, as many of you will know, Genoa has become an open-air museum, thanks to the works of Costa Rican artist Jiménez Deredia, which until January 10, 2021 will enrich the heart of the town with an artistic route waiting to be discovered.

A widespread exhibition that allows art lovers, and not only them, to discover the works of this contemporary artist along an entirely Genoese route that goes from Brignole railway station to the Porto Antico of Genoa, just a few meters from our docks.

If you haven’t done so yet, we recommend following this itinerary to appreciate the works of this extraordinary sculptor. And remember to take some photos! His works have been masterfully positioned; stopping to admire them will allow you to appreciate truly evocative scenarios and glimpses of Genoa.

Deredia’s Works Installed in Genoa

deredia evolucionEight large sculptural works, seven of which are exhibited for the first time, have been installed in various points of the Ligurian capital.

These are massive sculptures in marble and bronze that fit wonderfully into the town’s architecture, animating the squares with their circular and oval forms typical of the artist’s style.

Deredia recovers the sphere as a symbol, alluding to transformation and journey, conveying a sense of bliss thanks to the expressions of the subjects who seem to look to the future without worries.

The Exhibition Route in the Center of Genoa

At each installation of the artistic project titled Deredia in Genoa – The sphere between two worlds a map is available to easily move through the town and find the different stages of this journey through the artist’s work.

Deredia between Costa Rica and Liguria

incantoAlthough his artistic name is linked to his hometown in Costa Rica (Heredia indeed), his artistic training is deeply connected to Italy. In 1976, at the age of 22, he moved to our country thanks to a scholarship and began traveling around Europe, coming into contact with the continent’s main artistic movements.

After a few years, Deredia graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara and subsequently attended the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Florence. The intellectual stimuli of those years profoundly modified his approach to artwork: immersed in the Florentine atmosphere, Deredia deepened his interest in the Renaissance period that can be found in many of his works. For many years Deredia has lived and worked in Liguria creating monumental works for museums and public places in Europe, Asia, the United States and Latin America, carrying his message of peace and hope through sculpture.

The exhibition was organized by the Municipality of Genoa with the collaboration of other private institutions and will remain on display until January 10, 2021 (subject to extensions).

An opportunity for those who, on permitted days, wish to stroll through Genoa and discover its beauties between sea, art and urban fabric in the vicinity of our moorings.
