Weeks ago, for the section dedicated to boat itineraries from our marina in the center of Genoa, we proposed a great classic, namely the navigation from Genoa to Camogli. Today we want to take you a bit further, to discover places accessible only by sea – or on foot, along scenic paths – as they are not connected by any road artery. Those familiar with the Ligurian territory or the surroundings of Genoa have probably already guessed: we are talking about San Fruttuoso di Camogli, a small cove that hosts a few houses, a tower, and an abbey, all surrounded by the crystal-clear sea and the lush nature of the Ligurian Riviera.
Here we will see the boat itinerary from Genoa to San Fruttuoso, and then illustrate the beauties of this small – yet dense – bay east of our city.
The boat itinerary from Genoa to San Fruttuoso
The bay of San Fruttuoso is just 13.5 nautical miles from our marina in Genoa: after leaving the moorings of our marina and exiting the port, skirting the long breakwater, you proceed along beauties such as Boccadasse, Vernazzola, and Nervi, then head towards Camogli: after rounding the unmistakable rocky tongue of Punta Chiappa, you sail at a distance from the rocky coast – enjoying the view of the Hermit’s Cave and, shortly after, the Saracen Tower – to finally arrive inside the bay of San Fruttuoso.
Here, awaiting sailors, are two mooring fields: on the eastern side, small boats can find a place, while on the other side there are buoys for the mooring of larger vessels. As we always remind those departing for San Fruttuoso from our marina in Genoa, during this approach, it is important to pay great attention to the area of the Christ of the Abyss, marked by buoys, at a short distance from the mooring field for small boats.
What to see in San Fruttuoso di Camogli
Having covered the miles from Genoa to San Fruttuoso, after mooring in the buoy field, it is certainly worth visiting the beauties of this small bay. The attractions are not many, but they are all close and especially remarkable! Here is a brief overview of what awaits you:
- The picturesque bay: those fortunate enough to reach San Fruttuoso by sea should take a moment to admire the beauty of this cove, where man and nature have come together to create a harmonious and unique setting. Amidst the greenery stand a few historic buildings, in what was once the possession of the Doria family, and which still presents itself today with its original appearance.
- The pebble beach: in front of the Abbey lies a small beach of white pebbles, a sought-after destination for relaxing amidst this mix of nature and architecture. One part is free, the other is equipped.
- The Abbey of San Fruttuoso: the highlight of this small village is certainly its Abbey, managed by FAI (after the donation made by the Doria Pamphili family in the 1980s). An isolated church built to protect the relics of the namesake Saint, a Benedictine Monastery, and then the family burial ground of the Doria: over the centuries, this complex has been many things, and it still retains elements from each phase.
- The Path to Camogli: for those who, after sailing from Genoa to San Fruttuoso, wish to take a walk in nature, or for those intending to reach this small village on foot, the path connecting the abbey with Camogli, crossing the Portofino Regional Natural Park, is certainly worth mentioning.
- The Tower: above the abbey stands the Doria Tower, built in 1562, to protect the possession thanks to its strategic position and artillery equipment. It is possible to visit the interior spaces, to have a breathtaking view of the cove.
These are the main attractions that await you after sailing from our marina in Genoa to San Fruttuoso. Are diving among your hobbies? Then you certainly cannot miss the Christ of the Abyss!
If instead, you are planning your next sailing in Liguria, we recommend booking your berth in the port of Genoa, to moor comfortably in the center.
