The characteristics of the moorings, the level of protection, the presence of dedicated parking, the reputation, the services offered nearby for boat maintenance, the quality of the facility, the services available on-site: as we have already seen in the past, there are truly many elements to consider when choosing a berth. But you should not only evaluate the “internal” aspects of the marina. To understand where to keep your boat, it would in fact be necessary to also consider the location of the marina, perhaps questioning a well-established habit: it is not necessarily true that the port close to home is really the best choice! Certainly, for many boaters, keeping the boat just a few minutes’ drive away is undoubtedly the most effective option; for many others, however, it might be more convenient to choose marinas far from home, but more strategically positioned to offer high-level sailing experiences.
Today, therefore, we will see what aspects to consider when choosing where to keep your boat, going beyond the mere criterion of proximity: we will thus discover that in some cases the advantage of having a berth a few minutes from home can be outweighed by the benefits of a marina that is farther away, but with an objectively better location.
Where to Keep Your Boat? Close to Home
For many sea wolves, there are and never will be any real doubts about where to keep their boat: think, for example, of the Genoese who have been mooring their vessel for years here in our Genoa marina, alongside Ligurian leudi and gozzi. Proximity in fact guarantees many advantages, such as maximum accessibility to the boat, with the possibility of even making short outings, even a completely improvised outing at sunset, at the end of a working day. The emotional factor should not be overlooked either, namely the peace of mind of knowing your vessel is nearby.
Certainly, there can also be disadvantages. Of course, our Genoa marina is surrounded by stunning destinations, some of which are indeed just a few miles away; many other marinas positioned along the Italian coasts, however, do not boast such a privileged location. It follows that the time and fuel saved to reach the berth must then be factored in to reach beautiful, interesting, and diverse areas by boat.
Where to Keep Your Boat? A Region to Explore
It should not be surprising at this point that, for many boaters, understanding where to keep their boat is not a given. It is not for those who know every corner of their own coast, for those who live in an area with limited appeal for a boater, as obviously for those who live far from the sea.
In all these cases, the right solution may be to choose a marina farther from home, favoring a berth in a strategic area. From this perspective, the boat becomes a vacation home that allows you to visit the coasts, bays, and other attractions of an area full of interest, with the possibility—perhaps after a few years—of moving elsewhere, to discover another region.
Those who choose to keep their boat not close to home but in a marina identified as strategic are therefore already in the right place: it follows that, once they leave the berth, short sails are enough to reach bays, coves, or islands, dedicating every minute on the boat to pleasure.
The Boat as a Vacation Home
There is no doubt: when deciding where to keep your boat, it is important to consider both your type of vessel and your actual desires in terms of sailing. Those who view boating primarily as a daily pastime, with short outings—perhaps dedicated to fishing—several times a week, will certainly have great advantages in choosing a marina close to home, even a small port with relatively limited services.
Those who instead experience boating as an escape, as discovery and as vacation, may favor a berth that is farther away but strategic. The relationship with the marina also changes, of course. For the sea wolf who moors close to where they live, the marina becomes an integral part of daily life, an extension of their own home. Conversely, for those who moor far away and focus entirely on the quality of sailing, the port becomes an integral part of the experience, becoming a destination itself: it goes without saying that in these cases marinas with premium services should be favored.
The Length and Type of Boat Make a Difference
As mentioned, to decide where to keep your boat, whether close to home or in a strategic marina, the type of boat must also be considered. Generally speaking, it is possible to say that the ideal mooring for a small vessel is typically the marina close to where you live, assuming shorter outings; the berth for a more habitable and more comfortable vessel, typically over 10 meters, can instead be farther away, having at your disposal a floating vacation home, allowing you to spend pleasant nights in port or at anchorage.
